JOSHCO takes swift action on illegal electricity connections at it’s units

Press Releases No Comments

The Acting CEO of JOSHCO, Nokwazi Mtshali, this week conducted an oversight visit to the City Deep project following a media statement by City Power highlighting illegal electricity connections affecting 122 rental units under JOSHCO’s management.

The recent disconnections at City Deep (20 January 2025) and Kliptown Flats (15 January 2025) revealed ongoing challenges related to tampering and vandalism, which impact JOSHCO’s operations and revenue.

These issues also raise concerns about potential internal collusion, which will be investigated. The outcomes will guide future measures to address the root causes of electricity theft and strengthen collaboration with City Power.

To combat electricity theft and improve operational efficiency, JOSHCO is implementing a comprehensive action plan that includes:

1.     Prepaid Meter Oversight
JOSHCO is exploring the feasibility of directly managing prepaid electricity meter installations and audits to prevent tampering and ensure accurate billing.

2.     Infrastructure Security Enhancements
Security will be bolstered through the introduction of tamper-proof technologies and real-time monitoring systems for DB boxes. Additionally, security personnel will receive specialised training to enforce stricter protocols and conduct regular inspections.

3.     Tenant Education Campaigns
Expanded educational initiatives will inform tenants about the importance of compliance, the benefits of legal connections, and the severe consequences of tampering with electricity systems.

4.     Tenant Engagement Sessions
Regular engagement sessions will be facilitated to promote understanding of safety, compliance, and shared responsibility for protecting infrastructure.

5.     Accountability Measures
JOSHCO will investigate allegations of illegal connections and take decisive action against any individuals found to be complicit, reaffirming the entity’s commitment to integrity and transparency.

JOSHCO remains dedicated to improving service delivery, fostering trust with tenants, and ensuring safe, reliable access to electricity for all residents. The organisation looks forward to working closely with City Power to implement effective, long-term solutions to address electricity theft.
